The Servants and I are always fighting

Now, for the non-Indians reading this blog, you're probably thinking..."Vijay has servants?" Having servants in India is common...it's actually more peculiar if the house didn't have servants. Since there are so many people running around, the house is always a commotion. I'm not sure if I'm counting everyone but currently, if you include the cook and drivers, there about 7 people helping us.

There is the obvious upside to having servants, I wake up every morning and tell what I want for breakfast, by the time I'm out of the shower...things are ready for me. However since I'm from America, I'm still getting used to not being as independent. The servants get really irritated with me and we always go back and forth on things.

The main guy, Ramu, is very gung-ho about his job. For the last week, I've been making my bed the way I like it. When I come home from work, Ramu remakes my bed the way he likes it...to ensure all the beds are made the same way. I left my shoe trees by my bed in the morning yesterday, when I came home...they were no where to be found. It took me 20 mins to find them stored away in my dresser.

So today, I left the shoe trees in my dresser. When I came home, I took my shoes off and walked to my room to get my shoe trees. By the time I got to the front door, Ramu had already put my shoes away. Also, under orders from my aunt, he makes sure things are in perfect order. Basically, if I don't put things in a drawer...Ramu puts it away for me, or in the case of clothes, washes it. I left my dress socks and a t-shirt by (not in) my closet this morning, when I came home...they were washed and folded in their respective drawers. While it's irritating that things are always moving around...it is kind of a welcome change to see my clothes washed on a regular basis vs my prior methodology of picking clothes that don't smell.

The cook has continually yelled at me because I keep on bringing my dishes to the kitchen. She insists I leave things on the table. She was horrified to see me serving myself ice cream over the weekend. This certainly is not a "woo is me" rant...I just think it's funny how things operate here. I've made it clear I at least want to do my own laundry, let's see if people will actually let me do it.

On another note, my cousin bought me a sweet 32" HDTV for my room. I will be useless when I come home from the office/factory.

  1. Either you will like this life of being waited on hand and foot and live in India for the rest of your life or you will hate this and be back in the states or move out in a few months.

  3. I'll never get irritated enough to move out, especially when I'm only here through the end of the year. The entire servant situation doesn't bother me, just amuses me since that's the way things are here. Plus, how can I ever get mad at Ramu? When I woke up this morning, there was a bowl of freshly cut mangoes outside my room.

  4. Do they have Saved by the Bell in India for you to watch on your new TV before work?

  5. Sigh, no more SBTB for me. My mornings consist of me talking to people in America and reading the national newspapers. I miss Zach and Kelly.
