The one instance when trying to kick an 8 year old girl in the head is socially acceptable

I love my Blackberry. I am lost without it and take my phone everywhere. When I go to sleep, I put it next to my bed, it's usually on the sink when I'm taking a shower. If you've ever gone out with me, you know I'll answer my phone whether we're at dinner, at a lounge or my personal favorites, while skiing/running. However, I will NEVER answer the phone when I'm at the movies. Why? Because I have some common courtesy and want to be a meaningful member of society.

Unfortunately, cellphone etiquette has not made it to India. During meetings, when a cellphone goes off, the person will answer and talk to the person. The meeting will continue with that person talking in his seat. This isn't just at our company, I've seen it elsewhere. My personal favorite instance was last November when I went to see the latest James Bond movie. 20 mins into the movie, a cellphone rings. It happens to be the woman next to me, she takes her time picking up...this is the conversation:

"Hello? Oh don't worry, I'm at the movies, I can talk"

So what does this have to do with me trying to kick an 8 year old girl? This weekend I watched Transformers 2. There were two little girls sitting in front of me. Throughout the movie, they were talking to one another. Not whispering, but talking. I got irritated but kept my cool. After a while, one little girl gets our her cellphone and calls someone. She quickly hung up. After a while, I hear her phone ring again...she talks on the phone and passes the phone to her friend to talk.

This is when I lost it. As my family can attest, I used to have a terrible temper. Some people might find that hard to believe, but my mom will confirm I was a monster.

A responsible 25 year old would have leaned over and asked the girls to quiet down. But this is India, where everyone believes they are the SOLE EXCEPTION to the rule. Being friendly will not get you anywhere. So I did the next logical thing...I started kicking the chairs in front of me. The seats have a thick plastic shell, so I reasoned after a while, I'd be best served if I start kicking towards the edge instead of the middle.

So I keep on kicking the chairs, no response from either girls. Then in one kick, my foot goes between both seats and nearly hits the girl in the head. My foot is lodged in between the seat but instead of pulling it back, I decided to teach them a "lesson" by leaving my foot there.

The girls both look back at me and stare, not sure what to do. After a few seconds, they just turn their heads back and watch the movie. I took my foot out after 15-20 seconds...but just to make them mad, I kept my foot on the top of their chairs and kept tapping my feet.

Petty? Yes
Immature? Definitely
Irresponsible? Of course

But you know what? They didn't talk for the rest of the movie. Jokes on me though, Transformers 2 was terrible and I felt like I wasted 2.5 hours of my life.

I guess karma does exist.

  2. I give it an A- depending on the items you had within close reach. If you had a soda, you should have "accidentally" poured it on them. That would have been an A.

However, the title is misleading because you never tried to kick an 8 year old in the head, nor did you kick her in the head.

  3. You answer your cellphone at the dinner table??? Dude that ain't etiquette either. Unless of course it's an emergency. But good call with the kicking of the chairs with those girls.

You know you're not making India sound very nice (rude people, bathrooms with a hose, etc).

  5. I only answer the phone at the table if it was from my boss. I may glance at my blackberry but once again, I'll only respond to e-mails if it's work related. I never claimed to adhere to cellphone etiquette, I try my best.

I could see why people think I'm not enjoying India but all the random things I've mentioned in the blog humor me more than irritate me.

  6. Transformers 2 was awesome. It fulfilled everything it was supposed to...Megan Fox running around in slow motion.

  7. Serves them right. Pretty ballsy thing to do, but I guess that's how one rolls in India!

The Megan Fox running scenes were quite reminiscent of the opening credits for Baywatch...

  9. Hahahahahahaha. I'm not sure what is funnier. The story or that you used to have a horrible temper as a child.
